Following the deadly explosions at Apple assembly plant Foxconn on Friday, an analyst has predicted that iPad production could drop as much as 36 percent in the third quarter.

Analyst Mike Abramsky of RBC Capital wrote that iPad production could drop 1.8-2.8 million units, against an estimated third quarter (June-September) production run of 8 million units, or 22-36 percent. This would impact Apple revenue by $1.1-1.7 billion, Abramsky noted, according to CNN.

A less grave scenario, Abramsky said, was that the Chengdu plant would only be down for a month, decreasing iPad supplies by about 1.3 million units in the third quarter.

Foxconn's Chengdu factory reportedly has 52 iPad production lines and is said to be able to produce more than 40 million units a year. But yesterday an explosion ripped through the facility's "polishing plant" at around 7 p.m. local time, killing two people and injuring 16.

Foxconn's troubles are well-documented, ranging from a string of factory worker suicides in 2010 to charges against three employees for allegedly leaking iPad 2 designs to third-party accessory suppliers. In May, Taiwanese newspaper DigiTimes reported that labor and part shortages at the Chengdu factor could lead to shipment delays for the iPhone 4 and iPad 2.

Since its launch, Apple hasn't been able to keep up with demand for the iPad 2. In its first quarter earnings call Apple reported a sharp decline in iPad, down 4.69 million units from 7.33 million the quarter before. Chief operating officer Tim Cook called it "the mother of all backlogs."

Apple TV

Apple TV continues to dominate the market for media-streaming devices, although the total market is small enough to put the entire category's future in doubt.

Apple TV - both the first and second-generation models - together control about 55 percent of the media streamer market, according to a report by In-Stat this week that tracks the number of units sold during 2010.

Just over 3.5 million media streaming devices, also known as over-the-top (OTT) set-tops, were sold in all of 2010. By contrast, Apple sold 4.69 million iPads in the last quarter alone; in April, Netflix added support for the iPad via an app.

A separate In-Stat report found that about four times as many respondents said that they watched video content on a TV via a PC as a separate set-top box like an Apple TV or a Roku box. Mike Paxton, the In-Stat analyst who authored of the media-streamer report, said the sales figures led him to suspect that the dedicated media streaming set-top box might not be around in a few years, or relegated to just a services play.

"None of these are shipping in any large volumes - a couple thousand here, a couple thousand there," he said, speaking of the smaller players. "It just doesn't make sense when there are so many other devices in the home that do it already."

Apple TV shipped 1.95 million units, or about 55 percent, In-Stat found. In second came Roku, which notched sales of 450,000 units, or just under 13 percent. TiVo only sold 175,000 units, In-Stat said, or about 5 percent. Many more, including Logitech's Google TV, plus products from Iomega, Boxee, Western Digital, Sony, and Seagate sold under 100,000 units, Paxton said. However, several of those, including the Logitech Revue, Boxee Box, and others, began selling late in the year. In-Stat didn't release the entire report, reserving it for its clients.

In 2007, Apple dubbed the Apple TV a "hobby," and rarely broke out sales figures for the product up until the launch of a smaller, $99 Apple TV last September. In the week before Christmas, Apple said that it had sold a million units.

The problem, Paxton and In-Stat's research said, is that so many other devices offer the same services - Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, and Vudu, among others - that the dedicated streaming devices do.

A small In-Stat survey of 393 users found that 41.0 percent of those that view video content on the TV use a PC. About 25.7 percent use video game consoles like the Microsoft Xbox 360 and Sony PlayStation 3, which also offer the media streaming services. And a surprisingly large number - 34.6 percent - accessed those services from a connected television, more so than the 22.4 percent that used a connected Blu-ray player. The only device category to report fewer users than the video streamer/OTT box, at 11.2 percent, were those that used a PC's software in conjunction with another device to watch video, at 6.4 percent.

Rumors have surfaced that Apple might launch its own dedicated connected television, bringing the Apple TV inside it as a platform, rather than as a dedicated box. "If that product [the Apple TV] goes away, this market goes down to nothing," Paxton said.

Android eat Apple

Piper Jaffray believes that Apple won't ship its fifth generation-iPhone until late in the September-ending quarter. "We recently spoke with an iPhone manufacturing equipment supplier who indicated that orders for new equipment are several months later than usual," Munster and Murphy wrote.
Apple shipped an impressive 16.9 million iPhones in the first three months of this year, according to Gartner Relevant Products/Services. The downside for Apple, however, is that 36.2 million Android-based smartphones shipped in the first quarter -- up from 8.36 million units one year earlier.

Android's steep rise suggests that Apple's hold on the leadership position in the smartphone Relevant Products/Services application Relevant Products/Services space is slipping. If past history is any indication, however, Apple may begin offering the iPhone 4 at a reduced price after the new iPhone 5 launches later this year, noted Gartner Research Vice President Carolina Milanesi.

"Apple has been decreasing the price of the previous generation device Relevant Products/Services when the new one launched so I would expect a similar trend this time around," Milanesi said in an email Friday. "It will depend what kind of [iPhone 5] improvements we will see as to how much discount we will see on the iPhone 4 and indeed if the 3GS will continue to ship."

LTE On The Backburner

Still, Apple will need to do more to keep from eventually being overwhelmed by Android's startling growth, which rose 36 percent year-over-year in the March ending quarter. By contrast, Apple's iPhone shipments grew 16.8 percent growth during the same period, according to Gartner.

Earlier this month, Google Relevant Products/Services said it was activating over 400,000 Android-based handsets on a daily basis, and with more than 100 million devices based on Google's mobile Relevant Products/Services platform already in play. Android Market is also growing rapidly. Over 200,000 free and paid applications were available in Android Market as of May 10, with more than 4.5 billion applications already installed on handsets worldwide.

One looming issue that gives Android-based handset makers a potential edge is the wireless Relevant Products/Services industry's ongoing transition to LTE. According to Piper Jaffray, LTE modems currently consume too much power Relevant Products/Services to meet Apple's battery Relevant Products/Services life requirements, and hence are "not likely be in the next iPhone," noted the firm's analysts Gene Munster and Andrew Murphy in a note released Thursday.

Still, Apple expressed no sense Relevant Products/Services of urgency when the topic came up during the company's conference Relevant Products/Services call with investors last month. "The first generation of LTE chipsets force a lot of design compromises with the handset, and some of those, we are just not willing to make," Apple CEO Tim Cook said.

Delayed iPhone 5 Launch

Apple's postponement of its iPhone 5 launch from the usual early June release date gives Android-based handset makers an opportunity to make short-term market-share Relevant Products/Services gains at Apple's expense. Piper Jaffray expects Apple to sell 16 million iPhones in the June ending quarter, versus the 16.9 million iPhones Apple in prior quarter, according to Gartner.

Piper Jaffray believes that Apple won't ship its fifth generation-iPhone until late in the September-ending quarter. "We recently spoke with an iPhone manufacturing equipment supplier who indicated that orders for new equipment are several months later than usual," Munster and Murphy wrote.

Earlier this week, Gartner noted that a 13 million unit bump in global Relevant Products/Services handset inventories occurred in April due to an overstocking of the channel in response to the earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan, which "caused an initial panic over shortages," Milanesi observed. However, what happened in "Japan does not seem to have impacted Apple," Milanesi said.

Still, Piper Jaffray thinks it's possible that supply Relevant Products/Services issues related to Japan's earthquake and tsunami had affected Apple's hardware Relevant Products/Services ramp for the iPhone 5. Alternatively, dithering over whether to support Relevant Products/Services LTE or add an audio codec socket might have contributed to the delay as well as having to deal with software Relevant Products/Services-driven features not "fully-baked" in time to permit a normal June release. On the other hand, the analysts added, "we have no tangible insight as to which one or group of these reasons caused the slip."

Apple Store

The first Apple Store opened 10 years ago today, and to kick off the next decade, it seems Apple is planning an overhaul of its retail locations internally dubbed "Apple Store 2.0".

According to 9to5Mac, the next-generation stores will eschew paper signage in favor of interactive iPads. These iPads would appear next to products as paper signs currently do.

9to5Mac said its source revealed that the stores' makeover goes very high up. In fact, it was overseen by Apple CEO Steve Jobs and senior vice president of industrial design Jonathan Ive. Ive, Apple's golden boy designer, is behind signature Apple designs of products like the iMac, iPod, iPhone, and the iPad.

The rumored makeover would reportedly make Apple Stores more interactive, ramping up its personal setup service for newly purchased devices. This service will allegedly have a dedicated area within Apple Store 2.0 called "Startup Sessions," where Apple employees would help customers get started with a new iPhone, iPad, or other product.

Additional aspects of the stores' facelift include revamped, bigger displays and a new sound system. Sources told 9to5Mac that boxes have arrived at Apple Stores today intended to be opened by store visual managers that could be some part of this.

Apple could also release a new iOS app intended for use in stores. When users with the app installed on their devices walk into an Apple store, the app would detect which store they're in and offer options like making a Genius Bar appointment or speaking with a specialist. 9to5Mac says the app could be released on Sunday.

Since the first Apple Store opened in 2001, Apple has opened a total of 324 retail locations. Apple has said it will continue to emphasize locations in China. While Apple hasn't disclosed the locations of the next store, the company has said it will open 40 more stores by September, 30 of which will be outside of the U.S.

Apple Store

From mistake to blockbuster success -- that's the story of Apple's retail stores at the 10th anniversary. Apple boldly opened its first store in Virginia as computer maker Gateway was closing its stores. Now Apple is reportedly planning a refresh of its stores. But some Apple store employees are expressing dissatisfaction and want to unionize.
Ten years ago, Apple CEO Steve Jobs offered a "private" video Relevant Products/Services tour of Apple's inaugural retail store Relevant Products/Services at a mall in Tysons, Corner, Va. The proud proprietor showed off areas dedicated to home and professional users and invited customers to come and see the company's latest products and "see what it's like to have wireless Relevant Products/Services connection to the Internet," which was a big deal at the time.

In the video, discovered on YouTube by The Washington Post, Jobs also shows off the software Relevant Products/Services gallery; shelf space for non-Apple products, including Sony camcorders and Palm Pilots; and stands behind the very first genius bar, with the disclaimer, "I'm not a genius."

Today, plenty of business Relevant Products/Services analysts and Apple shareholders may disagree, as Apple now has 300 retail stores around the country, a key component in the blockbuster sales engine that has made Cupertino, Calif.-based Apple the eighth most profitable company in the U.S. and number 35 in this year's Fortune 500.

Risky Business

The direct retail push was widely considered a risk Relevant Products/Services. BusinessWeek at the time said the stores might be "one step forward, two steps back in terms of getting Macs in front of customers" because it would take away business from Apple's distributors.

"Given that at that point Gateway was in the process of closing all their stores, I'd say it was a bold move, and at the time many predicted failure," said technology Relevant Products/Services analyst Michael Gartenberg of Gartner Relevant Products/Services Research.

He was referring to the Irvine, Calif.-based Gateway, which saw its fortunes slip after the burst of the dot-com bubble in the late 1990s and whose final outlets closed in 2004.

"Apple's success at retail underscores the level of attention they have paid to every part of the retail process and become a model for the retail industry," Gartenberg added.

With sales of iPads, iPods, iPhones and Mac computers booming, Apple is reportedly getting ready for an "Apple Store 2.0" refresh, with a heavy emphasis on personal setup of devices, according to reports.

In another clever move, reports said, the company may replace conventional signs around the stores with interactive iPads, which serve Relevant Products/Services the purposes of allowing quick, detailed product information (and perhaps reducing staff demands) as well as promoting the tablet Relevant Products/Services computer Relevant Products/Services, which has had sales of more than 15 million in just more than a year.

The blog 9 to 5 Mac also said the company will also create bigger, better electronic displays and launch a new app for personalized store visits. There are also reports of a new product launch to commemorate the anniversary.

State of the Union

It's not all wine and roses, though.

Macworld reports that a group of workers in California's Bay area -- Apple's backyard -- are using the anniversary as an opportunity to get press attention for an effort to unionize. A person claiming to work at one such store told the magazine there are concerns about "break schedules, training opportunities, the selection and hiring process for internal candidates for open positions, and wages."

A group calling itself the Apple Retail Workers Union sent a statement to Macworld saying "we work in one of the most demanding retail environments while suffering through unfair treatment and compensation, among many other various issues ... We deserve better. Our time has come."

Apple didn't respond to our request for comment in time for publication and didn't respond to Macworld.

SIM Card

SIM cards are pretty small. The Micro-SIM within the iPhone 4 and iPad is even smaller. But is there a need to go even smaller? One could argue that you could never actually have an electronic component that's small enough; the world of tech is constantly evolving, and having smaller SIM cards would allow for smaller phones in the future. A Reuters report suggests that Apple has already "proposed" a standard SIM card size that's smaller than the ones already in use, and that's according to an Orange executive. Orange is a cellular provider in France, so the rumor definitely has some legs.

The European telecoms standards body (ETSI) also confirmed the report, but work on the project had yet to begin. Something like this takes months, even years, to fully iron out, particularly if it's an industry-wide change that would have to be adopted on a global scale. Anne Bouverot, Orange's head of mobile services, had this to say: "We were quite happy to see last week that Apple has submitted a new requirement to ETSI for a smaller SIM form factor -- smaller than the one that goes in iPhone 4 and iPad. They have done that through the standardization route, through ETSI, with the sponsorship of some major mobile operators, Orange being one of them."
Is this a sign that Apple wants a micro-micro-SIM in the next iPhone? Given just how long something like this takes, we're thinking they may be considering such a card in the iPhone 6...should a device by that name ever surface, of course.

Japan Earth Quake

Apple is offering those customers with Apple hardware directly damaged as a result of the Japan earthquake and tsunami chance to possibly receive free repairs. The offer was posted on the company's Japanese website. It only applies to customers living in areas covered by Japan's Ministry of Health's Disaster Relief Act. It excludes standard (non-iPod touch) iPods, including the classic, nano and shuffle.

The offer was quietly posted in March. It's another offer by a high-tech company to help those affected by the massive earthquake and tsunami that took place on March 11, 2011. Ironically, that was the same day as the launch of the iPad 2.

It follows Softbank's offer to replace lost and damaged iPhones registered to its network. Time is running out to apply: the acceptance period for applications only runs through June 30th.

Apple Store

There's plenty of drama and suspense leading up to the Apple Store's 10th retail anniversary, which will take place this Thursday, May 19th. It's a significant milestone, and if all the online chatter is to be believed, Apple might be planning seize the day by launching a new product.

According to Boy Genius Report, around 10-15 employees from each Apple Store are on the books to work an overnight shift from late Saturday through mid-Sunday (apparently Apple plans to celebrate the Apple Store's birthday over the weekend). Adding to the intrigue, BGR claims to have heard from a "solid Apple source" that these employees will have to lock their cell phones in the main office and sign an NDA with Apple.

Sounds super secretive, doesn't it? Well, there's more. Apple workers will be hoisting up black curtains in store windows, so if you think you'll just stroll by this weekend and take a peek inside after hours, think again. In addition to all this, employees have reportedly been downloading gigabytes of data from corporate in a password protected ZIP archive labeled "training" that no one will have access to until Saturday afternoon.

It all sounds a little bit like a movie script, and unfortunately we won't get to see how it ends (begins?) until this weekend. Any thoughts on what Apple might be planning?

Apple's iMac Z68

Apple introduced its first Sandy Bridge based iMacs.
Thanks to @siromega I was pointed at iFixit's teardown of the new 21.5-inch iMac, which pointed out that the new system is actually first to use Intel's Z68 chipset - ahead of Intel's official launch of the chipset. It's a unique choice for Apple given that Z68 incorporates features that Apple doesn't seem to use in the new iMac (SSD caching, overclocking). But perhaps we will eventually see Apple embrace SSD caching in future models?

Guinnes World Records Logo
Time for Apple to clear out some space on its trophy wall! According to the Los Angeles Times, the company has been officially credited with a number of new Guinness World Records for its gaming-related accomplishments.

According to a statement released by the book-makers, Apple now has the "Most Popular Application Marketplace" in the world: more than 6.5 billion downloads, more than 260,000 apps, and more than 61 different ways to digitally fart using one's iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad.

We can't make this stuff up.

"The release of the iPhone has not just changed the mobile industry, but the video game world too," said Gaz Deaves, Guinness World Records Gaming Editor, in a statement. "With the never-ending App Store selection and an intuitive device, Apple has created a gigantic new space for itself in the casual games genre that literally brings entertainment to users wherever they may be."

According to the 2011 Gamer's Edition of the Guinness Book of World Records, Apple's iPhone 4 takes top-billing as the world's "Fastest-Selling Portable Gaming System." That's due to analyst estimates that pegged first-day sales of the iPhone 4 at around 1.5 million units: a significant percentage higher than Sony's PSP (200,000 units sold on launch day) and Nintendo's DS (500,000 sold within a week of its November 2004 launch).

Go figure, Apple's also receiving an award for having the largest downloadable video game store. Granted, Guinness is comparing a whole ton of apps that sell for dollars at a time versus services like Valve's Steam, which has around 1,100 titles available for purchase across a wide range of price points. Xbox Live's Indie Arcade numbers around 1,300 titles and the Japanese Virtual Console store for the Wii hits around 600 titles—a mere drop in the bucket compared to the more than 37,300 games one can find within Apple's App Store… for now, that is.

We say that as we do, for recent projections indicate that the Android Market is set to overtake Apple's App Store for the total number of apps offered. The switch from second-place to first should happen sometime around July or August of this year, depending on how growth rates for the two services track out. According to figures from the app store analytics-tracking company Distimo, the Android Market should number around 425,000 apps by August. Growth rates recorded for April of this year put the total number of new Android apps at 28,000 to Apple's 11,000 new iOS apps.

Apple might have a few Guinness World Records under its belt right now, but it might want to rent—not purchase—that trophy case. Times, and App Store sizes, will soon be a'changin.
